About this gcwr calculator

GCWR is the maximum combined loaded weight of the tow vehicle and trailer as specified by the manufacturer. It is a separate limit from trailer tow rating and vehicle GVWR.

How the calculation works

  1. Enter the manufacturer's GCWR.
  2. Enter the loaded tow-vehicle weight before connecting the trailer, including people and cargo.
  3. Enter the trailer's total loaded weight.
  4. The calculator compares the combined actual weight with GCWR and reports the margin.

Get a better result

  • Use scale weights where possible.
  • Do not add tongue weight twice when calculating combined actual mass.
  • Confirm the GCWR for the exact drivetrain, axle ratio and configuration.
Important: Tow Capacity Lab provides planning math, not a certification that a combination is safe, legal or manufacturer-approved. The lowest applicable rating always controls.

Frequently asked questions

Is GCWR the same as towing capacity?

No. GCWR is a combined-weight ceiling. Maximum trailer weight can also be limited by the tow rating, payload, GVWR, axle ratings and hitch ratings.

Does tongue weight get added twice?

No. Tongue weight transfers between the trailer axles and the tow vehicle; it does not create additional total combination mass.
