About this towing capacity calculator
A vehicle can be under its advertised tow rating and still run out of payload or GVWR. This calculator checks the major limits together using ratings you enter from your exact truck, SUV, hitch and trailer.
How the calculation works
- Trailer weight is compared directly with the vehicle's maximum tow rating.
- Estimated tongue or pin weight is added to passengers, cargo and hitch hardware to estimate payload use.
- Loaded vehicle weight is compared with GVWR, and total combination weight is compared with GCWR when you enter it.
- The result highlights the tightest margin so you know which rating deserves the most attention.
Get a better result
- Use the payload value from the tire/loading label for your exact vehicle when available.
- Use loaded trailer weight, not brochure dry weight.
- A scale ticket is better than an estimate whenever you can get one.
Frequently asked questions
Does being under the tow rating mean the setup is safe?
No. Tow rating is only one limit. Payload, GVWR, GCWR, axle ratings, tire ratings, hitch ratings and trailer ratings can become limiting first.
What tongue-weight percentage should I use?
Use measured tongue or pin weight when possible. If you are estimating, use the range recommended by your trailer and hitch manufacturers rather than treating a generic percentage as a guarantee.
Where do I find GCWR?
Check the towing section of the owner's manual or the manufacturer's towing guide for your exact configuration. GCWR is not always printed on the door label.
