About this trailer payload calculator
Trailer payload is the amount of cargo the trailer can carry without exceeding its GVWR, subject to the trailer's other component ratings. The basic calculation starts with GVWR minus the trailer's actual empty or curb weight.
How the calculation works
- Enter the trailer GVWR.
- Enter actual empty weight or the best verified empty-weight figure you have.
- Add fixed items that travel on the trailer, such as spare equipment or permanently carried gear.
- The calculator reports nominal payload and remaining cargo allowance.
Get a better result
- Factory empty weight may not include dealer-installed options.
- A scale ticket gives you a better baseline than a brochure estimate.
- GVWR is not permission to exceed axle, tire, wheel, coupler or hitch ratings.
Frequently asked questions
Is trailer payload just GVWR minus empty weight?
That is the basic calculation, but real safe capacity can be lower if another component rating is more restrictive.
Does tongue weight increase trailer payload?
No. Tongue weight is part of the trailer's total loaded weight. The trailer's GVWR still applies to the entire loaded trailer.
