About this trailer balance & load distribution calculator
Where cargo sits can matter as much as how much it weighs. This tool uses a simplified static-moment model to estimate how cargo placed ahead of or behind the axle-group center changes tongue weight.
How the calculation works
- Enter the trailer's empty weight and empty tongue weight.
- Enter the horizontal distance from the hitch ball/coupler pivot to the axle-group center.
- Add cargo weights and their distance from the axle center: positive toward the hitch, negative behind the axle.
- The calculator estimates loaded tongue weight and tongue-weight percentage.
Get a better result
- This is a simplified level-ground static model.
- Suspension, multiple axles, flexible frames and real-world geometry can change actual loads.
- Measure tongue weight after loading instead of relying only on the estimate.
Frequently asked questions
What does a negative cargo position mean?
Negative means the cargo center is behind the axle-group center, which tends to reduce tongue weight in the simplified model.
Can this tell me exactly where to load equipment?
Use it for planning, then verify actual tongue weight and axle loads. Equipment tie-down points, axle ratings and manufacturer loading instructions still control.
