How Much Gravel Can a Dump Trailer Hold?

Learn why dump trailer gravel capacity is usually limited by payload before bed volume, and how to estimate cubic yards from material density and trailer ratings.

A dump trailer can physically hold more gravel than it is rated to carry. For dense material such as stone, the payload calculation normally matters more than how many cubic yards fit below the sides.

Calculate trailer payload first

Start with the trailer's GVWR and subtract its actual empty weight. A 14,000 lb GVWR trailer that weighs 4,200 lb empty has a nominal payload of about 9,800 lb before considering any lower component rating.

Factory empty weight can differ from the real trailer after spare tires, tarps, ramps, batteries, toolboxes and other equipment are installed. A scale ticket gives you a stronger number.

Convert payload to cubic yards

Once you know available payload, divide it by the approximate pounds per cubic yard of the material. Gravel density varies by aggregate type, moisture, gradation and compaction, so any density preset should be treated as a planning estimate.

For example, a 9,800 lb payload divided by a planning density of 2,800 lb per cubic yard is about 3.5 cubic yards. If the material is wetter and heavier, the same trailer reaches its weight limit with fewer yards.

Then compare against physical bed volume

Physical volume is length × width × side height, converted from cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27. The safe planning volume is the lower of the physical bed volume and the payload-limited material volume.

This is why tall sides do not automatically mean you can safely fill a dump trailer with stone to the top. Tall sides are much more useful for lower-density material such as brush or mulch.

Scale the actual load

Bulk material is too variable to treat a density table as a final answer. When operating near trailer capacity, use supplier scale tickets or a certified scale and keep the load evenly distributed within the trailer manufacturer's instructions.

Frequently asked questions

How many yards of gravel can a 14K dump trailer haul?

It depends on the trailer's actual empty weight and the gravel's real density. Many 14K trailers reach payload with only a few cubic yards of dense aggregate, even when the bed could physically hold more.

Does wet gravel weigh more?

Yes. Added moisture increases weight per cubic yard, which reduces the number of yards that fit within a fixed payload.
